Employment Opportunities: Learning Guides

Role Summary

The Learning Guide plans, prepares, and teaches assigned courses in alignment with the mission, Policies & Procedures, and Learning Guide Handbook of Mighty Roots Academy. Learning Guides design engaging, student-centered learning experiences that reflect the MRA philosophy. They foster a safe, respectful, and collaborative environment while maintaining clear communication with families and staff.


Learning Guides are educators, mentors, and culture-carriers of the Mighty Roots Academy approach.





Core Responsibilities

Course Planning & Instruction

  • Plan and teach selected and assigned courses in various subjects and styles
  • Develop lesson plans based on:
  • Course description expectations
  • Student needs and interests
  • MRA educational philosophy
  • Select teaching resources (with Director support when needed)
  • Use pre-selected resources or required materials when specified
  • Offer extension activities for home use (no homework or grades assigned)
  • Provide a Scope & Sequence for each class taught to the Director


Preparation occurs outside of program hours.

Up to 1 paid hour per full teaching day may be provided for planning and preparation depending on course load.

  • Gather classroom materials from existing MRA supplies or purchase within assigned class budget
  • Submit reimbursement forms for approved purchases
  • Maintain organization and care of classroom materials
  • Clean up classroom space between classes and at end of day
  • Coordinate shared space use with other Learning Guides

  • Supervise students during classes, lunch, outdoor time, and transitions unless scheduled for an unpaid lunch break or other responsibilities.
  • Assist with student drop-off and pick-up on assigned days:
  • Supervise students or complete assigned jobs 15 minutes before program start time. Arriving as early as needed to be ready for this task. 
  • Assist with student pickup or assigned job 10 minutes after program ends
  • Maintain classroom management aligned with MRA culture and expectations

  • Use assigned messaging platform to communicate with families
  • Send course updates at least every other week
  • Respond to parent communication in a timely and professional manner
  • May attend parent meetings when requested
  • Participate in Student Orientation and Teacher Orientation

  • Conference with Director before start of year to review class approach and resources
  • Complete background check and Mandated Reporter Training (required)
  • Complete First Aid/CPR training if required (paid by MRA)
  • Attend required staff trainings and orientation sessions
  • May attend MRA events as requested

Programs Served

  • Learning Guides may teach in one or more of the following programs:
  • Homeschool Academy — Tuesdays & Thursdays (30 weeks / 10 months)
  • Creative Options — Mondays or Wednesdays (30 weeks / 10 months)
  • Half-Day or Single Courses — Special arrangement

  • Contracted as employees for the full program year
  • Starting rate: $16–19/hour for new or single-program Learning Guides
  • Higher starting rate may be offered to experienced Learning Guides teaching multiple programs
  • Paid monthly on the 5th
  • 1 paid sick day per number of teaching days per week
  • Up to 1 paid preparation hour per full teaching day (based on course load)

  • Learning Guide’s children may receive program placement (if criteria are met)
  • Up to 20% tuition discount for children attending during the Learning Guide’s teaching day
  • Families may apply for additional program discounts if eligible and funds are available

  • Budget creation or financial management beyond assigned class budget
  • Student placement decisions
  • Policy enforcement beyond classroom scope
  • Building maintenance or facilities work
  • Administrative enrollment processing

  • Students feel safe, engaged, and inspired
  • Learning reflects curiosity, creativity, and the MRA philosophy
  • Families feel informed and connected
  • Classes are well-prepared, organized, and aligned with program expectations
